How does this work?

At the source vs after-treatment

NOx forms inside the engine's combustion chamber when diesel burns. The hotter the burn, the more NOx. There are two ways to deal with it.

After-treatment. Let the engine make all the NOx it normally would, then clean it up downstream in the exhaust. That's SCR with AdBlue. AdBlue gets injected into hot exhaust gas, reacts with NOx, turns it into nitrogen and water vapour. A chemical clean-up after the damage.

HYDI Source reduction. Make less NOx in the first place by changing how combustion happens. HYDI injects hydrogen into the air intake, making diesel burn faster, more completely, and at moderated peak temperatures. Less peak heat means less thermal NOx formed. Holcim and Scania measured a 22% drop.

The SCR system still runs. AdBlue still does its job. There's just less NOx for it to neutralise.
